Perhaps I wasn't clear. I did *not* turn off pulse, its's still running.
All I did was change the references in realplay to use OSS.

I guess the equivalent of esd is aRts, but I'm not sure what the
equivalent of esdctl would be.

In any case I'll try this under Gnome and report.
