This is specific to ntfs-formatted drives?  If so,  I'll do my best to not
editorialize, and just offer the link to where this issue has been

Imo, it's a bug/regression in hal-0.5.10 (0.5.9 works fine), but without a
fix forthcoming from hal, we're working on a patch for kde to workaround
it.
