i have a compaq n750 with this wifi card:
# lspci
01:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI 
(rev 02)

try to use NetworkManager
/etc/init.d/NetworkManager start
it helped me on searching wifi ap to connect to
