Printer takes ages to print one page with FC8

Thanks to all who answered.  I must absolutely leave for an errand
now, but when I'll be back I'll re-read all the answers more
thoroughly and investigate better, using your suggestions.  However:

1) I had already written that there are no flashing leds, noises or
   anything from the printer, that the cable is USB and is OK, that I
   was trying to print a text only OpenDocument file and that even
   other print attempts (I tried "ls | lpr") wouldn't print anything.

2) In the meantime, here's something new. Since power up this morning,
   the printer looks "not ready". Again, no lights, noises,
   nothing. Nothing revealing (AFAICT) in the cups log (where I
   enabled debug). Below are its last messages and the lpq output.

Any further pointer/suggestion is welcome. Maybe the first thing now
is how to make sure, without carrying the printer to somebody else's
home to plug it into another computer, that the printer is still
working and that this is a software-only problem.
