Silent mounting of disks? Unwanted.

Greetings;

My daily mailing from logwatch had a surprise this morning.

I have other installs besides F10, each on its own disk. The F10 //etc/fstab
now lists the disk by LABEL= syntax after having lost the main F10 drive and
replacing it it, copying the whole system over before pulling the old (about
11 months) drive out.

Uptime is about 4.5 days, kernel 2.6.32-rc7.

I let yum update about 200 megs worth of stuff last night, but don't recall
that udev was in the list. In any event, this was about 16 hours before I
did the update with yumex according to the date on /etc/mtab.

None of the /dev/sdd* entries are listed in my fstab, and I did not hand
mount them, nor did I create the /media/disk-* entries. It is a 64 bit
mandriva-2009-1 install.

Something that thinks it has the rights to go around and mount everything it
finds seems to have the run of the system. Just one Q about that though, why
didn't it similarly mount the kubuntu-9.04 install on /dev/sdb?

Another bit of puzzling detail comes from the 'ls -l /media' output.

drwxr-xr-x 22 root adm 4096 2009-08-16 10:28 disk
drwxr-xr-x 15 root root 4096 2009-07-16 11:39 disk-1
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2009-07-17 12:09 disk-2
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2009-07-17 13:15 disk-3
drwxr-xr-x 20 root root 4096 2009-07-16 11:43 disk-4
drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 4096 2009-08-16 09:39 disk-5

Note the dates, all very much old history now. And, I would have used much
more descriptive names had I been the one making those mountpoint dirs in the
/media path.

According to the date on /etc/mtab, this wholesale mount took place at
~=8:30am yesterday morning.

So, how did those 6 partitions get mounted? Inquiring minds want to know. I
didn't do it, and I'm the only operator here.
