So is it possible to build asterisk so it works fine without zaptel modules, 
but will work with them if they were installed from something like a 3rd party 
repository? ie, dynamic detection of them?

also, if you are reviewing this perhaps change the blocker from FE_NEW to 
FE_REVIEW? :)
