well that's because i had the mem=4gb kernel param in there still. 
without that, it shows 7.5gb free.  i am sorry for the misinformation
earlier.

i still don't understand where the extra half gigabyte of ram disappears
to, however.

i am still unable to get 2.6.0-test11-x86_64-3 to boot on this system,
tho it is likely due to my unfamiliarity with 2.6 and my unfamiliarity
with the architecture.
