I like indicators also as to the progress. As we speak about indicators. 
I noticed that when running up2date from the terminal, the ### progress 
bar proceeds, the other indicators for percentage and file size do not 
function.

Regarding looking at the disk activity light. I haven't developed the 
habit of looking down under the keyboard much. a visual indicator on 
screen is good to have. (Even advertisements)
