Forumns instead of email?

I have used usenet (newsgroups), mailing lists and web forums for quite
a long time now. For myself I found mailing lists to be the most
effective way, followed by usenet (the high noise (spam) ratio is
disturbing there). With a forum I need to be online all the time - bad
if you pay by the minute!
