  it's a race condition under load, I managed to reproduce it once only
but not under debugging conditions, it involves the applet, the Xserver
and the the panel . I.e. nobody was ever able to debug it and find 
exactly what's happening. Logging in a new session under load or on an
relatively slow box can generate the problem.
