Try using the open source 'ati' driver instead of 'vesa'. Works for me
on my eMachines M6807 w/ATI Radeon 9600 Mobility M10. Won't help much
for the 3D, but gives you 2D acceleration. 

(Yes I finally got most of FC2-test2 installed, running a custom kernel,
though...)
