kernel 2.6.2-1.85 horks both X and mouse -- thankyou sangu!!

I should have read the archives a little more closely.  Here is the
solution from sangu:

Please modify Section "InputDevice" ~ EndSection in /etc/X11/XF86Config
file.

Option "Device" 
 "/dev/input/mouse0" or "/dev/input/mice"

and /etc/sysconfig/gpm file
DEVICE= "/dev/input/mouse0" or "/dev/input/mice"

I used "/dev/input/mice" and all is well again -- tq
