Try checking your BIOS settings for SATA vs PATA mode.  If you're using 
SATA... don't have the CD ROM on the same PATA bus as the hard drive.


If nothing... at the GRUB menu... try "a"ppending 
	acpi=off

(was than on or off by default now?)

or:
		acpi_serialize   acpi_osi=
