Does ld.conf break if the directory isn't there?  Think about systems that 
don't have X, no /usr/X11.  In fact, the whole idea of splitting 
everything out into /usr/X11Whatever is unclean.  IMHO it should all be in 
/usr/lib with the rest of the system libraries.
