Well, it's another WAG, but it would not be inconceivable for WinXP to
handle SMB (Win95, 98, ME, NT) traffic different than CIFS (Win2k, WinXP,
Win2003).  Possibly to make home networking "easier", while at the same
time supporting a business setting.
