I have experienced the X starting/stopping myself.  Think I have seen it 2-3 times now on various issues, the last was just
doing a reboot from the logout menu in gnome.

Mine is a ATI 9000 Pro w/KDS monitor.  Thinking this may be something non-hardware related though.
