Okay, I used yum.conf.rpmnew and hardcoded the "$releasever" string to
"2"

After this, I ran:
yum  update

This downloaded and installed the following two packages:  
fedora-release-2-4.i386.rpm and comps.rpm

Now, I am set.   Thanks for the help.
