Poor disk drive performance with FC3 RC3

I have the same problem on a Dell 8100.

However performance is still VERY slow (compared to FC2)  even with hald 
killed off.

It's definitely disk since it runs fine once a program is loaded until 
it needs to access disk again where it slows down horribly.
