Mental block on my part.  I thought is was the software implementation of
libGL.

I reinstated my old xorg.conf, after commenting out the synaptics
stuff.   Works great, but I still can get gdm to start Gnome.

No real error messages, except a bunch of X apps with pairs of warnings
like:
    (gnome-session:11567): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib
    (gnome-session:11567): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers
