The latest /usr/bin/sort is causing lots of damage.

See bugs# 166328 and 172028

My suggestion is that you don't update to coreutils-5.92-1

or if you have, that you downgrade again and reinstall fontconfig to
rebuild its caches that may have been broken:
   rpm -Uvh --oldpackage coreutils-5.2.1-56.i386.rpm
   rpm -Uvh --replacepkgs fontconfig-2.3.91.cvs20051017-1.i386.rpm

Unfortunately, if you have been bitten by this problem, you may not be able to read this
since it breaks thunderbird.

Just run fc-cache -f, should fix it for most. That's why reinstalling the fontconfig package would help, but that's overkill.

I also found that having an "empty" font path (i.e. nothing but fonts.cache-2, fonts.dir and fonts.scale) seemed to cause me a problem.
