ok, x41, sleep, and display (again, sigh)

Seems I've tried about everything, and I can't get the
x41's display to come back after sleeping. Here's my
(trival) sleep script:
#!/bin/bash
set -e
vt=`fgconsole`
chvt 12
echo -n 'mem' >/sys/power/state
vbetool post
chvt $vt
I've also tried 'Option "VBERestore" "true"' in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.
Anyone have any suggestions?
thnx,
--dmm
