Thanks - that fixed it for me (OP).
FYI I went here:
ftp://limestone.uoregon.edu/fedora/6/i386/os/Fedora/RPMS
and got:
glibc-devel-2.5-3.i386.rpm nscd-2.5-3.i386.rpm
glibc-2.5-3.i386.rpm glibc-headers-2.5-3.i386.rpm
glibc-common-2.5-3.i386.rpm glibc-utils-2.5-3.i386.rpm
then:
rpm -Uvh --oldpackage glibc*.rpm nscd*.rpm
that fixed it.
