The object is to change the icon to an image of your choice.  You can
personalize your user entry by System > Preferences > Personal > About
Me.  Click on the image next to your name and navigate to a .png image
of your choice.  Then read the thread in this mailing list titled F7T4
GDM login - how to change image for user? to see changes you must make
to get it to work correctly.
