It seems that the ATI Radeon x1300 also suffers from similar problems:

The symptoms on this particular card are that when the VESA driver 
goes to read the EDID information using the VBE BIOS, sometimes it 
comes back all zeros, sometimes it comes back with partial data, and 
sometimes we get the full data.  It works marginally better with a 
sleep(2) added before the BIOS call, but this still doesn't guarantee 
a full read of the EDID data.
