I was able to start gdm again after I added
AddGtkModules=false
in a '[daemon]' section of /etc/gdm/custom.conf. Without
that no dice regardless of which versions of gdm,
mesa-libGL, mesa-libGLU and xorg-x11-drv-ati I am trying.
I still need xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-24.fc8 to have any
picture at all.
