for packagekit, pk-transaction-viewer.  Because it failed I don't know what will

Specifically on this, you can run from a terminal (set a large scrollback buffer 
size, for big updates 1000 lines is probably too small):

pk-update-viewer --verbose
or
yum -d9 update
