Well, it's something with gconf.  I renamed /etc/gconf to /etc/gconf.old
and now firefox and gedit work.  Of course, if I try to boot into gnome,
I get an error message, but I don't use gnome anyway. Really, my main
gtk app is firefox, (which I use less than opera, but some sites don't
work with opera and do with firefox) 

Maybe the next upgrade will replace gconf?
