I've upgraded the firmware to q2e24 and now Fedora 10 boots fine.
I'll try to catchup with what you guys have been doing with your XOs
in the meantime.

To do the upgrade, I had to have the firmware on USB flashdisk as
having it on OLPC's nand leads to firmware image has bad internal crc
error message.
