And does acroread --sync work ?

If that *does* work then this is probably another version of
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=477174

i.e. gdb, use attach to the pid of the process, backtrace and see if the
app is hanging in gdk_x11_get_server_time
