Well, I've tried my rude reboot several times now with no xorg.conf file and using a standard gnome session, and I haven't seen the keyboard stop working again, so I guess it isn't evdev, it is just something random (at least it is random for me). Maybe applying some update got things out of kilter till I rebooted?
