no keyboard/mouse click input

After kickstarting a machine with the current Rawhide and booting into
runlevel 3, characters are not echoed at the "User:" prompt but it's
possible to log in as root. Once logged in, characters are echoed
normally. After starting X via startx (Gnome desktop), the system
presents the usual desktop but doesn't seem to quite finish rendering
the initial display (the little orbiting progress indicator freezes
and the upper and lower toolbars don't descend/rise completely.) After
this, it does not react to any keystrokes (including ctl-alt-bs,
ctl-alt-del and ctl-alt-Fn) or mouse clicks. The pointer moves when
the mouse moves.

The kickstart is pretty vanilla - no %pre/post stuff.
