As a matter of interest, how do you get the window with the slides up?

I'm running F10-Snap3-i686-Live-KDE (updated) on a Thinkpad T43,
and when I click on f=>Multimedia=>KMix
what I take to be the kmix icon jumps up and down for a few seconds,
but nothing else happens.
Right-clicking on the sound volume icon in the panel
lists Show Mixer Window but clicking on this
just brings up the volume slide (with "mute" at the top).

Running kmix on the command line does nothing.
I see that kmix is running:
