 yup, that makes a *huge* difference.  with the noscript addon but
flashplayer installed, firefox without playing flash is sitting at
about 15% CPU (which it's *never* done before now).  playing flash
pops it up to about 85%, but it drops again as soon as i stop flash.

 at this point, given that i'm not an FF expert, how does one
determine where FF is spending its time?  i'd certainly like to visit
a number of sites and see a histogram of what's costing me all that
processing time.

I would recommend to try another video driver, of course switching of any 3D if you use them. If you want to trace what FF is doing you can use some of the trace tools (e.g. strace) but be prepared for a lot of lowlevel info, that may or may not help you.
