Do not use SATA.

In the fora I saw a problem someone had on a Linux host, sharing a
partition to an opensuse 11 guest. Someone from Sun suggested the
problem was in Linux by which I understood him to mean the host, and
asked whether the problem occurred with a virtual disk.

I have the same problem with latest vbox under Windows Server 2003
running a Debian Testing guest, with a virtual disk. vbox doesn't have
the assist stuff packaged for Debian, and I don't feel like fiddling
with the rpm that is available.

The workaround is to choose IDE disk, not SATA.
