playing with real-time on a regular system?

Just a general note on realtime systems: Depending on what
your idea of "realtime" is, you are quite likely to have
big problems with a typical desktop system in which the
oh so helpful motherboard implements "system management
interrupts" which can't be turned off and always happen
at grossly inappropriate times :-).
