Hello,

can you start the GUI by going first to level 3 ?

That is :
reboot ,when GRUB opens ,choose the line kernel 2.6.31-12 and type "a" .
 Append a space and "3" to the kernel start arguments .
Boot with enter or "b" ,and be patient for 2-3 min.

This start the os into level 3 ,and you should be able to login with user
name
and pasword .

After login type "startx" ,again some patience and your in GUI.

There are still some issues and checks ,but first this should work .

Reply the results and we'll see.
