X server not accepting connections ?

Hello.

I have configured XFree86 4.0.1 (Red Hat Linux 7.0) for
my SiS 620 card and tested it with the X program. But
when I use startx the server refuses to start and gives
the message:

   waiting for X server to begin accepting connections

and then prints many lines of two dots (..)

I am supposed to do some configuration so that the X
server begins accepting connections?
