Default kernel, and I just backed down to run level 3 in inittab to t/s
this better. I rebooted & reran Xconfigurator. It went fine, and I notice
that it creates XF86Config *and* XF86Config-4. So, to be safe, I edited
both of those to make changes for my mouse: I added a like for 6 buttons
and changed PS/2 to IMPS/2. (Logitech MouseMan with the wheel &
thumb-button). The r

Also, the tdfx Glide and DRI stuff has been installed from
/preview.

Same thing. The worst one is GLPlanet -- I get a refresh rate of about
3fps (in about a second, it manages three full draws of the planet).

I did notice that the DRI section stanza in XF86Config-4 is empty:

Section "DRI"
EndSection

It could be the XScreenSaver wasn't compiled to use the GL support in
4.0.x.

What's odd about the Mesa packages (these were installed before the
upgrade and what's there now is Mesa-3.3-5) is if you try to remove it
it says (among other things):

libGL.so.1 is needed by XFree86-4.0.1-1
libGL.so.1 is needed by xscreensaver-3.25-4

Hmmm....
