If you read the errata, the accepted method for the kernel
is rpm -ivh kernel-blah-blah and then modifiy lilo.conf
to run the new kernel. That way you can retain the old kernel
and your special module(s) (I have udf compiled myself).

RedHat doesnt recommend that you upgrade a beta to a production
version.

The rest may not be related as the kernel install ran ld.config
