While this may not be the best answer, if your video card is supported
under both XFree86-3.3.6 and 4.0 you can run 'Xconfigurator --preferxf4'
or 'Xconfigurator --preferxf3' to set up each of the config files (note
there is now in /etc/X11 both XF86Config and XF86Config-4) When in 3.3.6
note where the sumbolic link /etc/X11/X points to, and also where it
points when running 4.0. I think (and hope) that's all that changes. you
might be able to script the changeover both ways. (Maybe Red Hat already
has this covered, and I just don't know it yet- check with me Monday
night after I get home from work and I'll tell you what I've learned)
