I would recommend APC UPS's. They have a wide range of UPS's, and have
free Power Chute GUI software RPM's that allow you to configure and control
the UPS. I would get at least a BackUPS or better model, that has a serial
interface. If you buy APC, you don't have to mess with powerd. There
is also a package called nut in 7.0, that I not familiar with, that is
supposed to allow you to monitor UPS's. APC's website is www.apcc.com.
