TrippLite is much less expensive than APC, but comes with the same
warranty/equipment insurance protection as far as I can tell. I have a
TrippLite OmniSmart 750 that comes with a software CD. The usual mix of
Windows 9x, Windows NT, Mac - and various flavors of Unix, including a
RedHat RPM.
It connects via a serial port, and you can configure the UPS to shut down
the machine if the battery gets low. (Note- charge the battery before you
use the UPS, or at least before you install the software.)
YMMV
