Ldap can do many things. Authentice web users with an apache module,
provide authentitication for samba. There is even a PAM module for
authenticating logons on your linux box against an ldap server. Have you
found the openldap project yet?? http://www.openldap.org. and yes, with a
single ldap server, you could provide authentication for just about any
service, a single logon and password. that would give you the same
functionality as nis.
