Hello Mike:
A few years ago I was searching the world for information on NT 4 and was
directed to a channel on Dalnet (I believe). I went there, got my answer(s),
and dropped off. Shortly thereafter, I began getting my feet wet with RedHat
6.0.. and decided I would go back into Dalnet and create my own channel
(#redhat6) and see what happened.
Have you ever heard of the term "biting off more than you can chew"? LOL..
talk about an overnight education in what I did _not_ know. Up until that
night, I only knew of Enlightment and a little about X windows.. and folks
started dropping into the channel left and right with questions about KDE, GNU,
GNOME, kppp, etc., etc... and I was absolutely clueless!!
But what did happen was amazing to watch... folks that were coming in to get
answers ended up helping others that were seeking answers themselves.. I just
provided the forum, and sat back and watched (still open for debate as to
whether I learned anything or not. LOL).
My point being... if you find a need for (fill in the blank), by all means, do
not wait on someone else to create it for you.. go out there and create it
yourself. You (yourself) may not know how to create it.. but by asking around
(to lists such as this one), you'll find that there are people around that do..
and their advice/assistance is given from the kindness of their hearts... for
free.
I have trouble dealing with people that I feel constantly want to pat
themselves on the back for this or that, so I'll be brief about my own little
task I'm working on... 2 weeks ago I finally began taking some steps to get
Samba running on a Guinness box I'd recently created. I'd been studying one
particular manual and thought I had a fairly good grasp of what was required...
then I ran into the inetd/xinetd issue and SWAT. After some venting at this
list, which (thank goodness) Mike Harris and Erik Troan addressed (in a more
mature manner than I deserved), I decided the world needs a HOWTO Samba with
xinetd.d/swat... and began creating it (not on my own mind you). I had to
laugh at myself for even attempting to write such a document, since I know
SQUAT about SWAT... but I'm learning.
