I think you have a misundertanding of how u2date is supposed to work
lookin at you answer. The options are:
Without X
---------
You run up2date -l 
to list the rpm's you can update. Now let us say gru (a fake name) is one of the
packages you can update. Then:
up2date -i gru
will download the rpm and install it. A list of rpm names can appear on
the excution line. No fooling around with rpm options is needed.

With X
execute: up2date
a gui opens giving you a list of downloadable rpms. You check the ones you
want to install and then hit next and next, etc untill all the steps of
installation are completed.
