In all the preceeding messages, I've not seen netstat used.  If so, please
ignore this message.

You should see something like:

[kgmorse@somehost kgmorse]$ netstat -an | grep LISTEN
tcp        0      0 0.0.0.0:25              0.0.0.0:*               LISTEN      


Is this the case?
