It sounds like you have a default route set up using the ethernet
connection.  When you bring up the PPP connection, it does not override
the default route.  You should not have a default route over the
ethernet connection, as your default route should point to the Internet.

To fix this, run netcfg or netconfig as root, and remove the gateway
address for eth0.  After you save your changes, run
"service network restart", or "ifdown eth0 ; ifup eth0" to reset your
routes, and things should work fine.
