Re: [K12OSN] Server Vendor

I really like Rackable Systems, but anyone should be able to sell you what you want.

www.rackable.com, they sell to google, and the like. Dan Levien is my sales guy 408-321-0290 x 306, and has always done me right. They can even by part build boxes for you. Most of their hardware is 1/2 depth, so you can go 'Back 2 Back' as they call it. 1.3TB(IDE RAID) in a 3U enclosure is a pretty neat trick tho :)

I've bought from VA, Penguin, Dell, Compaq, and some other fairly local vendors. Rackable does a very good job for me, but everyone has their own best :P

I'm not affiliated with them in any way, I'm just a school who buys from them. You might try Supermicro(www.supermicro.com), they are very cheap, I don't think you can buy directly from them, but I have some of their servers without fuss.

Buying just straight parts is another good way to go, there are tons of vendors for server like motherboards, tyans', Intel, etc.

If you want hand-holding, then go with a server company, like Dell, or Penguin, or whoever. If you know what you want, and just want the best price, you'll probably never get the best price, unless you go parts shopping.

I have the go ahead to implement a K12ltsp server here in our library and I need to get together some suggestions for a good vendor to go through to get a server.

Does anyone know of a good vendor to go through to get a good hunk of a server for a good price?
I have been looking at ubid, ebay, cdwg, dell, and hp, and all of those are kind of expensive or don't have what i'm looking for in an K12ltsp server.

Thanks
