there is a sample for a serial microsoft mouse included at the end of
lts.conf (worked for me) and a link to the page with the XFree mouse
options.
What did you "fix" in dhcpd.conf?

What error messages did you see? Did you try to start in Runlevel 3 to see
errors before X?
