Thank you, gonna check the perms for the individual users. Thats a good starting place. As for root, when I log in I do not get sound, except when I log onto the server.

It is strange that you get sound on Gnome but not KDE. I would look at the
permissions for /dev/dsp and make sure that everyone (user, group, and other)
has read/write access to the device. It is possible that Gnome runs its sound
daemon as root whereas KDE might run it under the user you log in as. Also try
logging in as root with KDE and see if you get sound that way.
